Free Pattern: Ariel Beanie

The Ariel Ponytail Hat is worked top down in continuous rounds making a spiral. I find it easy to move from one round to another using this technique. The brim is a continuation of the hat. Meaning you will not fasten off after the last round. Based on style of brim you choose; you will continue from the last stitch of the last round. Ariel can be worked in most worsted weight yarns. However, due to the nature of yarn not all #4 worsted weight yarn is the same, be sure to check your gauge or your hat may not be the same measurements.

Ariel came about when my sister Ariel came to me and asked for a specific hat. She liked the trendy hats of the season and really wanted something that was along the lines of what you would see at your local outdoors shop. She also wanted a hat that was more tailored to her personality.

We sat down at the kitchen table and talked about what she liked about the hat trends of the day and what she would change if she could. Then I went to work...

I did some research on Pinterest and other platforms for ideas on stitches to use. I also needed to know measurements and such.

Now in all fairness this was before I started designing. I was just really starting to put my skills to use and at that point my skills were still pretty adventurous beginner.

I found the information I was looking for and started working up templates. Oh My Goodness, I failed miserably, HAHAHA!

It was awful! She made me give it to her too! Someday I will post a picture of it, lol but for now I will save some face and just ask you to take my word for it.

The ribbing was way to tight, and it just did not come out right at all! However, I am not a quitter and once I have an idea in my head I can't get rid of it until I've completed it to my own specifications.

So I did what any determined crocheter would do... I practiced my craft. THIS is when I started designing! I'm not sure about you but I would buy a pattern start working it then start changing it! This is also when I started realizing I have my own way of doing things in crochet...

As I was working up a beanie for my niece Emilie, it hit me! I figured out how to get those oh so spiffy horizontal rows without it getting too tight!

So I worked up Arie"s hat and felt like I just won the world championship of crochet designers! Arie was pretty damn happy too 😀

Needless to say I was beyond satisfied with the end result of this one! The hat is fantastic and that beautiful face really help to show it off!

Skill Level:

Easy/ Intermediate

Gauge/ Measurements:

Gauge was measured using all rows and stitches.

Keep in mind when checking gauge that one of the ribbed rows is part of the front post half double crochet row. Be careful you don't count this row twice.

Width was measured at the middle (widest) point of the hat.

Length was measured from the top middle of the hat to the bottom of the hat brim.

• 14 sts & 12 rows= 4”x4” • 8.5” W, 8” L Full Beanie • 8.5” W, 7” L Ponytail Beanie • 8.5” W, 6.25” L Bun Beanie

Materials:

• 1 skein #4 worsted weight yarn. I used Yarn Bee, Rustic Romantic

• Hook sizes, o H 5mm, for hat body and brim option 1 o G 4mm for brim option 2, or appropriate hook sizes to meet gauge.

• Yarn/Darning needle to weave in ends

• Scissors

• Stitch marker to track the end of each round

Stiches:

• Ch- chain

• Slst- slip stitch

• Slstblo- slip stitch back loops only

• Sc- single crochet

• Scblo- single crochet back loops only

• Hdc- half double crochet

• Hdc3lo- half double crochet in the 3rd loops only

• Fpdc- front post double crochet

Let’s begin!

Rnd 1 Secure yarn onto ponytail elastic. Hdc36. (36)

Rnd 2 *Hdc3lo2, 2hdc3lo in next*. Repeat ** around. (48)

Rnd 3 *Hdc3lo3, 2hdc3lo in next*. Repeat ** around. (60)

Rnd 4 *hdc3lo4, 2hdc3lo in next*. Repeat ** around. (72)

Rnd 5 *Fpdc1, hdc1*. Repeat around. (72)

Rnd 6-8 hdc3lo1 around. (72)

Rnd 9 *Fpdc1, hdc1*. Repeat around. (72)

Rnd 10-12 Hdc3lo around. (72)

Rnd 13 *Fpdc1, hdc1*. Repeat around. (72)

Rnd 14-16 Hdc3lo around. (72)

Rnd 17 *Fpdc1, hdc1*. Repeat around. (72)

Rnd 18 Hdc3lo around. (72)

Finishing:

Classic crochet brim (use 4mm hook)

Row 1 Ch 9. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across. Slst to the next unworked stitch of the hat body. Slst the next, turn. (8)

Row 2 Skip the two slst’s. Scblo into the last sc from the previous row. Sc across, ch1 turn. (8)

Row 3 Scblo across, Slst to the next unworked stitch of the hat body. Slst the next, turn. (8) Repeat rows 2 & 3 around.

To seam the band together, slst the front loops of the last row to the beginning chain row. Fasten off, weave in ends
