Christmas Butterfly Square

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! I hope that everyone is feeling the love and joy that this time of year is filled with.

December is always a special time of year in my family, and not just because of all the extra time together we are able to take advantage of. Today, December 27th, is my birthday and my Grandmother, Nellie Jo Curry Ballard, would have turned 95 years old on December 31st. She recently passed away (October 26th 2021) and is dearly missed every single day. She loved this time of year, and I know that she is watching over all of us as we navigate the first set of holidays without her.

When I think about this holiday season, I am overwhelmed with the idea that this will be my first one with no grandparents earthside. As I looked for a design idea for this Crochet-A-Long, I found these sayings, and they just seemed too fitting for this year:

“A butterfly to remind me even though we are apart

Your spirit is always with me

Forever in my heart….”

And

“A snowflake is winter’s butterfly”

So why not put the two together? Why not celebrate the love and joy of the holidays with butterflies- light things of beauty that fly in the air like the snowflakes that fall from the sky. Here in Western New York (just south of Buffalo) the snow has been lightly falling for awhile now.

This year, I will be adding a few more butterflies to my holiday decorations, and I hope that you will join me. For me they will symbolize those we have lost that continue to bring love and joy into our lives. What, or who will they symbolize for you?

With all the love and joy this holiday season,

Sarah Jo Schmitt

What you will need

Yarn:  I used I Love This Yarn (Forest Green and Goldenrod); Red Heart Super Saver (Bordeaux)

Hook(s): US Size I/5.5 mm

Yarn needle

Scissors

Let's talk fiber!

If you need to substitute with another yarn and are not sure what to look for here are some tips...

What you will look for between labels

Is the weight the same?

Are the fibers similar, such as Acrylic, wool, alpaca, nylon, etc.?

Is the gauge similar or close enough to make it work?

Are the recommended hook sizes the same?

Another piece of information you can look for is the number of wpi (wraps per inch). This information is not always available so me be more difficult to compare.
